What is ecoacoustics and why should it be of interest to conscious residents of our city? We understand perfectly well that a car driving down our street pollutes the air with exhaust fumes. But not only that – from an acoustic ecology perspective, it also pollutes the air with the noise of its engine. When thinking about the Wrocław of the future and designing life in this city, it’s high time to consider the sound aspect as well. Together with invited specialists, we will look at this issue from three perspectives: urbanistic, acoustic and deep listening-wise.
This workshop will teach you how to investigate and mitigate urban noise. The program includes two lectures, a discussion, hearing-clearing exercises, and a short sound walk:
Soundception (Iga Kołodyńska, Joanna Wyrwa) | Participatory mapping of the city’s soundscape
Aleksandra Klimek | Standards for permissible noise levels and methods for reducing the impact of noise on human and animal health
Canti Spazializzati | A soundwalk through Przedmieście Świdnickie
ABOUT THE LEADERS:
Aleksandra Klimek
PhD student and employee of the Department of Acoustics, Multimedia, and Signal Processing at Wrocław University of Technology. Her research focuses on the application of acoustic metamaterials in the construction of partitions with increased insulation. Her professional experience includes researching the acoustic properties of building materials, conducting simulations in the field of vibroacoustics, and acoustic analyses of traffic and industrial noise. Her professional practice includes working for Silencions and KFB Acoustics, as well as participating in research grants at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
Iga Kołodyńska
Project manager of Soundception, assistant professor at the Institute of Spatial Management at the University of Life Sciences. In 2018, she defended her doctoral thesis on methods of landscape identification and its valorization for spatial planning, and as part of its implementation, she received a Preludium grant from the National Science Centre. She heads two NCN research projects: Sonata and Beethoven, which concern the role of sound in landscape perception and the relationship between sense of place and mobility, as well as the possible impact on environmental management in cross-border regions. She is a member of the Leading Research Team of the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław, “Sustainable Cities and Regions.” Her research interests include the perception of landscape change, the role of sound in landscape perception, participatory approaches to landscape valorization and management, and initiatives related to environmental management.
Joanna Wyrwa
Educator, multimedia creator, researcher, and urban activist. Her interest in socio-economic geography and spatial economics, complemented by social and artistic studies, allows for a creative approach to geo-demographic research, in which she is actively developing. She is driven by a passion for creating culturally sensitive and socially just spaces, striving to ensure that these places respond to the diverse needs of the community, especially people with special needs, taking into account gender and power studies. Her experience in this field includes over 10 years of work in the revitalization of Wrocław’s Nadodrze district, as well as the creation of educational and cultural programs that promote inclusion and a sense of belonging in Wrocław and Lower Silesia. She has been awarded scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Marshal of the Lower Silesian Province. She is a member of the Soundception team at the Audiosphere and Environmental Acoustics Laboratory of the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław.
