As part of the Canti Spazializzati Sound Lab workshops in 2021, we will continue to work on issues related to the creation of acoustic spaces in sound compositions. Based on our experience in working with spatial sound (ambisonia, binaural), we will look at the possibilities of virtual/extended reality (VR/XR) environments in terms of acoustic modeling. Techniques for shaping acoustics have traditionally been available to architects. In the tradition of sound art, which treats sound as a function of the space in which it propagates, the artist usually works with existing acoustics. VR/XR techniques make it possible to define acoustic parameters in the process of creating space, thus broadening the spectrum of compositional decisions in the hands of sound artists. During the workshop, we will focus on techniques for using VR in the process of working on spatial compositions.
The basic tools used during the workshop will be the Unreal (https://www.unrealengine.com/) and Wwise (https://www.audiokinetic.com/products/wwise/) environments. We will also present the possibilities of integrating Unreal with popular interactive sound composition applications such as Max/DSP and Ableton Live.
